Does Your Target Market Have a First Name?

Marketing folks like me have to be careful when we toss around the term "target market." Because, the truth is, target markets don't buy anything. The only people who buy products and services are . . . well, people.

The first characteristic of successful marketing communications is that it "speaks person to person." So, before we spend one dime communicating with our intended customers, we have to know exactly who we're talking to.

Get to know your audience as a personal friend, by asking yourself questions like:

  1. How will s/he use your product or service?
  2. Why does s/he need your offering now?
  3. What other vendors might s/he be considering?
  4. What anxiety might s/he have about making the wrong decision?
  5. What "language" does s/he speak when discussing offerings like yours?

Now, keep this person in mind when you write your next sales letter, or redesign your web site, or answer your phone. No matter what the communications medium, speak person-to-person and you'll get better results.
